Construction to delay traffic from Strip to airport

Lane closures

Construction near McCarran International Airport will impact traffic on Tropicana Avenue and Paradise Road for the next two weeks, likely causing delays for people traveling from the Strip to the airport.

The closure will limit access to southbound Paradise Road from eastbound Tropicana, the primary route for people leaving the resort corridor to get to the airport.

Officials said Tropicana will be reduced to three eastbound lanes, and the dedicated right-turn lanes to Paradise will be closed for two weeks beginning 9 a.m. Monday.

Motorists will still be able to turn right at the intersection but only when all eastbound lanes have a green signal.

The lane closures are likely to cause traffic backups on eastbound Tropicana, officials said.

Monday is also the start of school for UNLV students, many of whom use the airport tunnel to get to school. But because the campus is east of the construction zone, the work shouldn’t cause major backups from that direction.

A separate project in the same area, however, is already causing delays on Tropicana. Work being done for Southwest Gas has closed lanes on Tropicana at Swenson Street, but that work is scheduled to conclude Wednesday.

The lane restrictions are to allow crews to install the structure for a new 60-foot-wide electronic sign over Paradise. The signs will be installed beginning in late October.

The signs will direct passengers to the proper terminal when the new Terminal 3 opens next year. Similar signs will be installed near Russell Road and on the Las Vegas Beltway.

The signs will show general roadway information until the new terminal opens. The electronic signs will allow messages to be easily updated once the terminal opens and as airlines change location and services.
