The Henderson Chamber of Commerce has named real estate developer Scott Muelrath as its new president and chief executive officer.

Muelrath, who will begin work Sept. 6, has been involved in property management and real estate development in Southern Nevada since 1993. He most recently served as the general manager of the Galleria at Sunset mall in Henderson.

During his time at the Galleria, Muelrath helped in the opening of the police community relations office, the first in a retail setting in Nevada.

Rick Smith, chairman of the chamber's board of directors, said Muelrath's hands-on experience working with businesses at the mall is a large asset he brings to the job.

"Scott has worked very closely with all kinds of businesses – small, medium and large," Smith said. "In managing a major regional mall, you've really got to be able to sit down with the tenants who own businesses and help them with business plans, ways to improve businesses or helping new entrepreneurs organize."

Muelrath also has a history of involvement at the chamber, working with the Henderson Business Resource Center and the Henderson Development Agency. Most recently, he served as a member of the chamber's board, a position he resigned upon becoming CEO.

"He's got a commitment to helping the community grow and a commitment to improving economic development in Henderson and the valley as a whole," Smith said.

Muelrath graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a bachelor's degree in history, and prior to moving to Las Vegas, was involved in real estate in the San Francisco Bay area.

He'll follow in the footsteps of Alice Martz, who led the chamber for 14 years and helped to grow Henderson's business community while the city's population boomed.

Times are different now with the economy sputtering and many businesses struggling to take root.

Muelrath has experienced both the boom and the bust first-hand while at the Galleria, Smith said, giving him a unique perspective on the challenges facing the city and it's businesses.
