Nevada freeway projects get $11.5 million in federal grants

Two freeway projects in Southern Nevada will benefit from federal grants announced Wednesday.

Nevada will receive $11.5 million of about $417 million announced by the Federal Highway Administration.

Of the Silver State’s funds, $2 million will go to the construction of the Boulder City Bypass and $3.75 million will go to construction of an interchange for Cactus Avenue at Interstate 15. The rest of the money is going to seven smaller projects in Northern Nevada.

The money awarded today is from 14 competitive grant programs, to which officials from each state sent 1,800 applications totaling nearly $13 billion, or more than 30 times the amount of funds available.

"Transportation investments like these will create jobs and improve the quality of life for Nevada residents as well as strengthen the state’s economy," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood in a statement. "The demand from the states for these funds shows just how critical the need is for infrastructure investment."

The money given to Nevada will only fund a small part of the two high-priority projects.

The Cactus Avenue interchange project is scheduled to begin in 2014 and will cost more than $85 million.

The first phase of the Boulder City Bypass is expected to begin construction in about a year and will cost $173 million to $213 million, but completing the second phase of the bypass will cost another $325 million to $850 million.
