Letter to the editor:

Why real change in America will take courage

This democracy was created by men who did not agree unanimously on everything but who, together, hammered out laws to help us govern ourselves responsibly. Today, ordinary citizens expect our elected representatives to make responsible decisions governing our welfare.

Multinational conglomerates have undermined our economic stability with their greed and left ordinary citizens to wonder if tomorrow they will have a job, a roof over their heads, if their children will be able to see a doctor or receive an education.

Reasonable people know that real change takes courage. It can be achieved when the people we have elected work together for the long-term good of their citizens. Our lawmakers must leave at the door the weight of ill-conceived political promises and pressures exerted by corporate donations to them.

Our lawmakers can forge a workable solution to today’s problems. The question is: Will they? All over the world people are making their voices heard by using the vast social network of instant messaging. There is power in the voice of the people if we use it on our elected officials to rid ourselves of the corporate takeover of America.

Will we look beyond our own immediate gratification and see a future that will provide for generations to come? Do we care about the health of our children, country and world? Will we choose the easy solutions or will we make the hard decisions necessary to make possible a better way of life for ourselves and future generations? Will we be brave enough to make our voices heard and respected, and ask responsible leaders to work together and do our will?
