Letter to the editor:

Social Security mischaracterized in Washington

Continuing the comments made by letter writer Richard A. Brown in Thursday’s Las Vegas Sun, I too am offended by the term “entitlement” for the Social Security program. Like millions of Americans, I paid into the plan for 30 years with the assurance that I would be able to collect from it when I reached a certain age.

Entitlement, as used by folks in Washington, is akin to a “dole.” To me it is more like a government-sponsored retirement plan.

As stated by Mr. Brown, if the folks in Washington had not dipped into and borrowed from it at ridiculously low interest rates, the plan would be solvent for many, many years. How can the folks in Washington justify dipping into the pension plan of its citizens but have the temerity to penalize a firm for doing the same to pension plans set up for its employees?

There is only one fix for Social Security — merge it with the retirement plans of U.S. senators and representatives.
