Letter to the editor:

GOP blocks vital public works projects

In a rousing speech last September in Milwaukee, President Barack Obama outlined a $50 billion proposal that would put construction workers back to work rehabilitating highways, bridges, railroads, air traffic control — our whole infrastructure. He leaned into the microphone and gave a “give ’em hell, Harry” speech that left us standing and cheering. If brought to fruition, his plan could wipe out the job shortage.

But those in the Party of No said no and started arguing debt and taxes. They can’t get it through their heads that government can’t reduce debt without having an income, and taxes are its income. They won’t restore previous tax rates on the rich, close tax loopholes or approve a jobs program; and the unemployed can’t contribute taxes.

It isn’t Obama’s fault. How can he pass anything we need when he has to give conservatives something we don’t want in order to get something we do want?

President Dwight Eisenhower invested taxes in an interstate highway system. Ronald Reagan spent taxes to give us a military lead. John Kennedy spent taxes to beat the Russians to the moon. It also launched a computer revolution. It was always government spending that kick-started development and jobs and gave us prosperous times.

We need to get behind Obama and tell those in the Party of No to help the people or they won’t get our support in 2012. We need jobs and America needs us!
