Letter to the editor:

GOP controls half of government, but ignores the public

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was quoted after the debt deal saying that “Republicans only control one half of one-third of the federal government, but the American people agree with us.” He’s wrong on both counts.

Our federal government consists of the presidency, Congress (House of Representatives and Senate) and the courts. Republicans control the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court. By all accounts, that’s half.

Also, polls have consistently said that American voters agree in big majorities that part of the debt solution is tax increases — the only thing that McConnell and his Republicans have staunchly opposed.

Why is the press taking these people seriously?
