Summer brings out the worst in new trash plan

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s Saturday article and comments about Republic Services’ Henderson pickups:

When I got the announcement about the new service, I was really excited about the big recycling trash can because I could hardly carry the red, white and blue containers full of recyclables to the curb. But now that summer is here, and we are hitting triple digits in heat, the trash smells so bad!

I am very good at keeping the food I need to throw away in the refrigerator until the day of pickup. It still doesn’t help with just your normal daily trash to put it in the can. Once I left the lid off, so that the smell might not be so bad, but when I went out there I thought I had a swarm of killer bees — they actually were flies instead!

Now I close the lid, but it about knocks me over when I open it to put trash in. I’ve washed out the can, I’ve put the odor-eating stickups in it to no avail.

Why can’t Republic Services continue with our regular service of twice a week for garbage but cut the recycling can to every other week? This would solve the problem — at least do it during the summer months. A buildup of trash only brings in roaches and bugs that we pay an exterminator monthly to get rid of. Will Republic Services pay my exterminator bill?
