Letter to the editor:

Congressional politics trump progress

As a proud citizen of Nevada and the United States, I must say I am saddened and embarrassed by the performance of Congress in the debt-ceiling debacle. The debt ceiling has been raised several times over the years with hardly a ripple. Why the big deal now? Politics and the 2012 elections.

It seems impossible for Congress to get the simplest of things accomplished. Nobody wants to work together because political points must be scored. In the meantime, roads, bridges and schools are crumbling. Power, sewer and water systems are outdated. Schools are failing (and flailing) because of slashing budget cuts and general inefficiency. And we need the Russians to get us into space. Sad.

The economy is still struggling because it is more important to Tea Party Republicans to monitor and legislate a person’s sexual behavior than it is to do the hard work of getting the economy moving.

Imagine what we could do if we pulled together as a country. I know, naive. But we can all hope, can’t we?
