Letter to the editor:

Spending, debt problems haven’t been resolved

The latest deal struck between the leadership of the two congressional bodies and President Barack Obama is another example of a broken government that is incapable of serving the people.

Born out of another crisis, with the threat of a “default” fabricated by President Obama and his feckless administration, this frenzied “deal” will not fix any long-term debt and spending problems faced by this nation.

The default position, if the contrived congressional panel fails to come to terms with the next phase of this plan, is to slash defense and Medicare spending. The entire burden, therefore, will undermine our national security and the interests of our senior citizens.

Why was not the interminable waste of the federal government and its overlapping and dollar sapping bureaucracy the object of the next round of cuts? Anyone who is at all familiar with the way Washington business is conducted can see that this latest plan only constructs a series of further crises that will have to be addressed by last-minute political infighting and complex legislative drafts that neither party’s elected representatives have read and understand before being implemented.

Presidential leadership is the missing element in this entire equation. What is needed is a “fiscal bulldog” for a president who is able to lead the two parties to a winning outcome. Unfortunately, America is lacking that presidential leadership, and the spending and debt problems that are crippling America have merely been kicked down the road to another day of last-minute dramas.
