Man arrested after burglary at Walgreens, police chase

A man faces arrest on charges of burglary and possession of stolen property after a burglary Friday at a Walgreens pharmacy and a chase by police.

Metro Police say James Kennedy admitted he committed the crime, saying he is a relapsed prescription drug user.

According to his arrest report, when asked by police if he had committed more than one burglary, Kennedy said, “I have nothing else to say. I don’t want to ruin my chances of probation for breaking into the Walgreens at Eastern and Tropicana today.”

Police responded to the store 2400 East Tropicana Avenue about 5:40 a.m. Friday after receiving a call of a burglary.

A suspect had been observed breaking the glass storefront to get in then exiting through the front entrance and putting a trash can in the back of a truck.

Police pursued the vehicle before detaining it in the yard of a Painted Hills Drive residence near Russell and Shadow Mesa.

Officials spoke with a female there who said her husband was driving the vehicle, but his whereabouts were unknown. A male was seen running from the area.

The suspect, later identified as Kennedy, was followed by Channel 13 News helicopter to a residence on North Kings Point Road.

The arrest report said Kennedy told police he drove the vehicle and that he ran from police because he was afraid of being shot for being an ex-felon. At that point, he attempted to get away but was detained by police.

He told police he had not committed any crimes for three years before Friday’s burglary.

The trash found in the truck contained numerous medications that had been taken from Walgreens. The stolen items had an estimated value of $250.
