Director of Charter School Authority named

The head of the state office that oversees charter schools has been named director of the new and upgraded state Charter School Authority.

A law that goes into effect Oct. 1 takes the current office of charter schools out from under the Department of Education and gives it independent status.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has picked Steve Canavero to head the authority.

There are 27 charter schools in Nevada, and five have received authority to start this fall.

State Superintendent of Schools Keith Rheault said Canavero will have authority over 10 of the 27 schools. The rest were created by school districts, and they will retain jurisdiction.

He said the five new new schools would be under Canavero's authority.

Canavero's staff of three would transfer with him.

The current governing board of charter schools is a subcommittee of the state Board of Education. A new board will be created, and Sandoval said he will name the members later.

Sandoval said Nevada is one of just eight states that has a statewide authority focused on building high-quality charter schools.
