LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Sandoval OK with wasting money on special election

Gov. Brian Sandoval has finally showed us who he really is. I assumed his no-new-tax pledge and proposed cuts to education, seniors and the disadvantaged indicated he was a true fiscal conservative.

I didn’t agree with his politics but at least I admired and respected his integrity. Appointing Rep. Dean Heller to the U.S. Senate, however, demonstrates his willingness to waste taxpayer dollars on an avoidable special election, especially if it helps the party that pulls his strings. That’s not fiscal restraint. That doesn’t even make sense.

Given that Heller was a strong enough candidate to win the open seat next fall anyway, there isn’t even much political upside. In fact, it means Nevada will lose a voice on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee.

When it comes time to start laying off schoolteachers and denying services to families with special-needs children, I hope the governor and new senator will be on hand to explain how this decision benefited them.
