LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Heller gets his wish, but he’ll face greater scrutiny

As I am writing this Wednesday evening, I am digesting the fact (along with my dinner) that Gov. Brian Sandoval has picked Rep. Dean Heller to replace John Ensign as U.S. senator.

This is fine. It is Sandoval’s right and duty to make appointments like this.

But this is a political appointment — Sandoval knows it, Heller knows it, and the people of Nevada know it. Don’t tell me it is for my own good and that I just don’t know it yet.

The governor is trying to give Heller a head start. Fine. Politics is ugly and all too apparent.

Heller is unknown in Clark County, but he is about to be well known. Everything he is about to do will be noted, analyzed and commented on.

Election Day is coming. Heller needed help, but he should try not to be overconfident.
