LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Jobs aren’t created if people aren’t buying

Lower taxes for the rich don’t create jobs — demand for goods and services creates jobs. I am a small-business owner whose company employs about 45 workers, and, according to the rhetoric, I fit the profile of one who would be hurt by eliminating the George W. Bush-era tax cuts.

I hire employees when there is a need, not because I have more money left over after taxes — that money accumulates in my bank or I use it for speculation. A need for more employees is created when the middle class and working poor have enough money and confidence to buy my product.

If teachers’ salaries are cut and assistance to the poor is eliminated, who then will buy the product that causes a need that creates a job that produces more taxes? Not the rich; they don’t buy anything — that’s how they got rich. If the budget must be balanced by taxing those who make the money, it will trickle back up to them in the long run anyway.
