Two students will get to see their art drive around town after winning an Earth Day contest sponsored by the Regional Transportation Commission.

The RTC recognized the top 10 of 110 students who participated in the contest, which was open to students in sixth through 12th grades.

The two grand prize winners, Yesenia Maldonado, 17, of West Preparatory School, and Dayhana Burns, 16, of Green Valley High School, also got to see their art on the side of a bus, which will be used for transit service for the next year.

The contest asked students to submit artwork that celebrates Earth Day and the RTC’s sustainability initiative, “quicker, cleaner, greener.”

The 10 runners-up in the contest were Vivian Lee, Ah Young Choe and Ashley Caoagas of Advanced Technologies Academy; Tori Cupp and Rachel Dennison of Green Valley High School; Kiersten Huang and Natthakan Sudsa Ngiam of Sandy Valley High School; and Shelby Schroeder of West Career and Technical Academy.

The RTC held a similar contest earlier this year as part of an anti-graffiti campaign.

In addition, the RTC recently awarded laptops to 40 winners of an essay contest sponsored by Coca-Cola. Entries in that contest were required to say how the student could reduce their carbon footprint by using services offered by the RTC.

Winning students were given a laptop computer at the April RTC board meeting.

More than 265 students entered that contest, which was open to all high school seniors.

The winners were: Melanie Barlow from Boulder City High School, Roger Barrett from Palo Verde High School, Bethany Bergh from CSN High School West, Vincent Bognot from Green Valley High School, Dani Cabot from CSN High School West, Halle Champion from Legacy High School, Daniel Coffey from Green Valley High School, Samuel Cruz from Green Valley High School, Liliana Davalos from Valley High School, Sharla Dean from Mojave High School, Mayra Dominguez from Southeast CTA, Everest Donske from Boulder City High School, Nicholas Freeman from Valley High School, Annelise Friedman from Southeast CTA, Lyndsey Gogue from Cheyenne High School, Dillon Higgins from Bonanza High School, Katelyn Hohl from Southeast CTA, Zachary Honea from Arbor View High School, Lance Hoshino from Foothill High School, Kirstie James from Valley High School, Kyle Kithasof from Advanced Tech Academy, LaBrea Marshall from Southeast CTA, Reed McGinley-Stempel from Green Valley High School, Calvin McMurray from Moapa Valley High School, Jamie Mitchell from CSN High School West, Kaitlin Mullen from Basic High School, Venea Omandac from Rancho High School, Jessica Padron from CSN High School East, Bernajane Palisoc from Silverado High School, Kaelen Penrod from Las Vegas Academy, Marcela Rodriguez from Foothill High School, Larissa Rodriguez from Cimarron-Memorial High School, Nathan Root from Foothill High School, John Schmitz from Basic High School, Francis Simon from West Prep Academy, Sonya Snyder from Advanced Tech Academy, Lilian So from Clark High School, Nicholas Tettamanti from Green Valley High School, Lane Williams from Boulder City High School and Tyler Williams from CSN High School West.
