Bill to strengthen rights of Nevada gun owners advances

CARSON CITY – A bill aimed at strengthening the rights of gun owners was approved Tuesday by the Assembly, 40-2.

Assembly Speaker John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, said the bill would allow a gun owner to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon by qualifying with only one semiautomatic weapon instead requiring the individual to qualify for each semiautomatic weapon.

Oceguera said there would be a $75 fee to cover five years.

Assembly Bill 282 also states that information gathered during a background check for a concealed weapon permit remains confidential.

Assembly Minority Leader Pete Goicoechea, R-Eureka, said the bill would make the permits more accessible and affordable.

Voting against the bill, which now moves to the Senate, were Las Vegas Democrats Maggie Carlton and Peggy Pierce.
