CARSON CITY – In emergency fashion, the Legislature on Monday approved a resolution asking Congress if it can delay a $64 million payment to the federal government.

The state borrowed money from the federal government to cover unemployment benefits paid to the jobless during the economic downturn.

Now the state faces an interest payment of $64 million due in September.

The resolution seeks to delay the interest payment for two years.

The resolution passed both houses of the Legislature within hours, with only Assemblyman Richard McArthur, R-Las Vegas, dissenting.
