Construction to cause delays on busy freeway interchange

I-15-beltway interchange

One of the valley’s busiest interchanges is going through a series of changes, and the process is likely to cause a number of traffic delays for the rest of the month.

Crews have been working on the Interstate 15 Design-Build South Project in the southern valley for more than a year, but the biggest change so far for motorists is the moving of the ramps connecting southbound I-15 to the Las Vegas Beltway.

Last week, a new exit for motorists going to the westbound beltway opened. Traffic going to the eastbound beltway is scheduled to move to the new exit May 1, but first some closures are likely to cause backups and confusion.

Here’s the plan from project officials:

• The ramp from southbound I-15 to the eastbound beltway will be closed from 9 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday while crews adjust barrier rails.

• The ramp from northbound I-15 to the westbound beltway will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting both Monday and Tuesday nights for roadway reconfiguration.

• The ramp from Las Vegas Boulevard to the westbound beltway will also be closed Monday and Tuesday night.

• The ramp from I-15 southbound to the eastbound beltway will be reduced to one lane beginning Sunday and continuing until the new ramp opens May 1.

That final lane reduction is likely to have largest temporary impact, as previous lane closures on the ramp have caused long backups at almost all times of the day.

It may also take a few days for motorists to adjust to the new configuration, once the exit is fully moved May 1.

In future weeks, more exits will be changing as officials open some of the collector-distributor roads that run along the sides of the freeways, so motorists should expect more changes and delays until the project is finished next spring.

Once the $246.5 million project is completed, motorists will have a wider freeway from Blue Diamond Road to Tropicana Avenue.
