Wind advisory issued for Las Vegas Valley

Winds expected to gust as high as 50 mph in deserts, 60 mph in mountains

Be careful while you're driving this afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory today for southern Nevada, including the Las Vegas Valley.

The advisory, which will be in effect from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., also includes northwest Arizona, the weather service said.

Winds will be from the southwest at 25 to 35 mph, with gusts between 40 and 50 mph in the deserts, forecasters said. Gusts up to 60 mph can be expected in the mountains, they said.

A wind advisory means that crosswinds are expected to be strong enough to make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, they said.

Strong winds over desert areas could also result in briefly lowering visibility to well under a mile at times because of blowing dust or blowing sand, they said.

They advised drivers of high profile vehicles should use caution and remain alert for sudden gusts or crosswinds and areas of reduced visibility.

The winds are being produced by a low pressure system moving across California and the Great Basin will produce strong and gusty downslope winds today along the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Although it will be windy, mostly sunny skies, with highs climbing into the low 80s, are heading to the Las Vegas Valley, forecasters said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 63 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 55 degrees. The record low was 37 degrees, set in 1966.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 62 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 64 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 59 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 68 degrees by 9 a.m., to 76 degrees by noon and reach a high of 83 degrees by 5 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 80 degrees and the record high was 98 degrees, set in 1950.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 82 degrees by 6 p.m., to 74 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 68 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Friday's morning low will be 59 degrees and Friday's high will climb to 80 degrees, they said.
