Sun Coverage

It was a time for flowers, applause and congratulations as three Las Vegas city officials were sworn into office this morning at the Las Vegas City Council meeting.

Two Las Vegas City Council members, Lois Tarkanian and Ricki Y. Barlow, along with Municipal Court Judge Cedric Kerns, each were administered the oath of office by outgoing Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Tarkanian, Barlow and Kerns all won re-election to their posts by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote during the April 5 primary.

Tarkanian, who faced Margarita Rebollal and Doug Ward in the Ward 1 primary, received 74 percent of the vote. She has represented Ward 1 since 2005.

Barlow, who received 73 percent of the vote in the primary, faced Richard Deeds, Randy "Mr. Randy" Voyard and Stanley L. Washington. Barlow has represented Ward 5 since 2007.

In the municipal judge primary for the Department 5 seat, Kerns won re-election with 73 percent of the vote over Bruce L. Gale.

The June 7 general election will decided the outcome of the race for mayor and for one other city council seat.

Goodman, who is finishing up his third and final four-year term, will be replaced by either his wife Carolyn Goodman or by Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchiliani, who face off on June 7.

Eight-term Democratic state lawmaker Bob Coffin and former state Democratic Party chief Adriana Martinez are vying to replace term-limited Mayor Pro Tem Gary Reese.

Two other municipal court positions will be decided on June 7.

In the Department 3 race, incumbent Judge Judge George Assad will face lawyer Heidi Almase. In the race for the open Department 2 seat, Sonny Bonaventure will face Susan Roger in the general election.
