Henderson may be hundreds of miles away from Hawaii, but that isn’t deterring Liberty High School from hosting an Islands Festival on May 7.

Community members are invited to the school, 3700 Liberty Heights Ave., from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. to enjoy the Pacific Islands culture, food, music, crafts and games. School officials hope to make it an annual event.

The festival will feature various student group performances, such as Liberty’s Polynesian Club and UNLV’s Ori Porinetia. The Te ‘Ata Ura and Nani Ola Hawaiian Dance Co. will also perform entertainment. Hot 97.5 KVEG-FM will be broadcasting the shows live.

Festivalgoers may also take part in a dodge ball tournament, prize drawings and an evening luau capping the festival from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Admission to the day’s events cost $1. Tickets for the evening luau cost $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and can be purchased online at www.libertyhighpatriots.com or at the school office. All proceeds will benefit the clubs and athletic programs at Liberty High School.

“The Islands festival will be an exciting event for our community,” said Liberty Principal Jeff Geihs. “We hope everyone will come out to enjoy the fun while supporting a worthwhile cause.”
