I can’t imagine the amount of money being spent looking into this problem of air traffic controllers falling asleep, as well as some of the solutions being considered, such as hiring a second body to keep the first person awake!
Here is a simple, inexpensive solution. Install dead man switches similar to those used by train operators, on a piece of equipment in the control rooms that are set to work when only one person is on duty. If it is not activated once every few minutes a very loud alarm goes off. Try sleeping through that.
