School District Police identify officer involved in weekend shooting

Clark County School District police today identified an officer involved in a weekend shooting while he was off-duty as John E. Evans III.

Evans has been an employee of the CCSD police since Febrary 2007. He is assigned to the Patrol Division and is on paid administrative leave pending the completion of an investigation by Metro Police, which is standard procedure.

On Saturday, Evans was in the parking lot of the El Pollo Loco restaurant near Eastern and Sahara avenues when he saw an altercation between two people across the street, Metro Lt. Dan Zehnder said.

One of the two pulled out a gun and fired shots at the other before running across the street to the parking lot where Evans was watching, police said.

Evans confronted the individual and shots were fired, probably both by the suspect and by Evans, although police are still trying to determine who shot first, Zehnder said.

The suspect then got into a car and drove off. Two people were later dropped off with non-life threatening wounds at Sunrise Hospital, where they were taken into custody by police, Zehnder said.

Police don’t yet know if those injured were shot by Evans. The shooting is under investigation by Metro with help from School District Police.
