Thomas J. Schoeman, president of JMA Architecture Studios, is the first recipient of the Dean’s Medal for his many hours of dedication and contributions to UNLV’s College of Fine Arts School of Architecture and to the region. Jeffrey Koep, dean of the College of Fine Arts at UNLV, noted, “I am simply amazed by Schoeman’s generosity and leadership.”

Michael O’Brien is the promotions/PR marketing manager for the Mirage. O’Brien was a casino marketing release supervisor for the company before his promotion. He received his bachelor’s degree in advertising from UNLV. Before joining the Mirage in 2008, he worked for the engineering firm PBS&J, heavily assisting with the extensive public relations effort for the widening of U.S. 95.

Cass Palmer is the president and CEO of United Way of Southern Nevada. Palmer was the senior vice president and chief human resource officer at Tropicana Entertainment Inc. “Living in Vegas for more than four decades has allowed me to understand the community’s needs. I am excited for this opportunity to help further expand upon United Way’s record of accomplishments and implement new strategies to strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Palmer.

Ernest Barela is vice president and chief financial officer and Jim Brockschmidt is national director of human resources for DLC Empire, the parent company of Dollar Loan Center and Loan Shack. Barela spent 15 years with Fremont Medical Center in Las Vegas and was president and COO during the company’s sale to new parent company Health Care Partners of Nevada. Brockschmidt was director of human resources for the Franklin Financial Corporation in San Jose, Calif.

Tracy Brantley was promoted to executive director at Life Care Center of Paradise Valley. Since joining Life Care Center of Paradise Valley 12 years ago, Brantley has been an LPN, MDS nurse and the director of nursing at the facility. Brantley holds an associate’s degree in nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., and a bachelor’s degree in health care management from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio.

Maureen Kane is general manager of BRIO Tuscan Grille at Tivoli Village at Queensridge. Kane was assistant general manager at the company’s Town Square location. She started her career with BRIO as an intern in Columbus, Ohio.

Touro University Nevada’s Dean of Students Rebecca Mills has been appointed director of public policy for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. Mills has served as dean of students at Touro University Nevada since July 2009. She earned her doctorate in education from the University of Arkansas before coming to UNLV in 1987 as a faculty member, where she was senior adviser to the president and vice president of student life.

Neal Tomlinson, a partner with Snell & Wilmer, will attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation Las Vegas 2011 Citizens’ Academy. The Citizens’ Academy provides community leaders an inside look into the FBI and its role within the community. Also, Mandy Shavinsky has rejoined the firm’s real estate and commercial finance services practice group in Las Vegas. Shavinsky first joined Snell & Wilmer in 2004 and returns after spending a few years as a partner with Glaser Weil Fink Jacobs Howard Avchen & Shapiro LLC.

Lionel Sawyer & Collins shareholder Jennifer Roberts was appointed a director of the Clark County Bar Association Executive Board.

Michael Buckley, a shareholder at Jones Vargas, was named a fellow of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys.

Stoney Mather is senior project engineer, Troy Bandy is chief materials engineer and Pedro Juan Nazario Mendez is senior inspector at Ninyo & Moore Geotechnical and Environmental Sciences Consultants.

Patricia Stein is dental director of Nevada Dental Benefits, where she will oversee the operations for the company’s mobile dental unit program.

Renée Marion is an oncology liaison with Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada. Marion has worked as a community liaison for several health care organizations including Creekside Hospice and Diagnostic Imaging of Southern Nevada.
