Metro Police are searching for a man who tried to rob a woman before shooting a security guard at the Tuscany Hotel and Casino early this morning.

Metro spokesman Marcus Martin said police responded to a call of shots fired at 2:30 a.m. outside the casino, near the corner of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane.

The situation unfolded when an armed man approached a woman leaving the casino and, while holding a gun, demanded her car keys, Martin said.

Police believe the woman threw her keys, at which point the man asked for her purse.

A security guard responded to the woman's screams, prompting the gunman to shoot him in the leg, Martin said. The security guard was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Authorities described the man, who ran from the area after the shooting, as white or Hispanic, about 5-feet-10-inches tall and wearing a dark-colored shirt and pants.

Police are reviewing surveillance video to see whether the incident was captured on camera, Martin said.
