New traffic light being installed near Rancho and Charleston

New traffic signal

Motorists might want to avoid Rancho Drive between Charleston Boulevard and Alta Drive this morning, but starting later today, traveling in the area should be better than it was before.

Las Vegas officials are expected to turn on a new traffic signal at the intersection of Rancho Drive and Palomino Lane at 9 a.m.

Before the ceremony, the signal will be on a flashing red mode, making the intersection an all-way stop, possibly backing up traffic on Rancho.

But once Councilwoman Lois Tarkanian flips on the signal, traffic in the area should improve, giving better access from busy Rancho Drive to nearby neighborhoods and Howard Wasden Elementary School.

The new $277,000 signal was paid for by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and was installed by Southern Nevada Paving.
