LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

It’s time for us to get mad at political hyperbole

I keep reading and watching TV in hopes of finding a person or political party to inject common sense into this financial mess that we — country and state — are in. Instead, the finger-pointing and name-calling go on and our financial morass continues.

In the movie “Network,” Peter Finch’s character exhorts people to go to their windows and shout, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore.” Are you there yet?

I am sick of hearing the hyperbole from ideologues who latch onto a theory and pursue it for either their own or party satisfaction, no matter the cost or consequences.

Gov. Brian Sandoval has committed Nevada to a politically suicidal path for his own ideology or his party’s ideology — no new taxes. A corporate income tax? No way. Why pay their fair share? Equitable mining taxes? No way. Why pay their fair share?

These are just two of the sacred cows protected by our governor. Think it might be because they are some of the biggest contributors to political campaigns?

What are the answers proposed by our governor? They’re disgraceful: Further strip our problematic educational system — fire teachers, increase classroom sizes, etc., and not just K-12 but higher education as well.

Look closely at his budget and it goes on the backs of not just teachers but also the poor, elderly, disadvantaged, etc. Nowhere will someone find any type of a “fair share” on the part of a business — any business.

Sandoval might be more polished and soft-spoken than his predecessor, but he is still just another pawn of those who enrich themselves on the backs of every hardworking man and woman of Nevada. Excuse me, I am going to open my window!
