Clark County schools Superintendent Dwight D. Jones is appointing a Washoe County schools official for the position of deputy superintendent of instruction.

Pedro Martinez, deputy superintendent for the Washoe County School District, would replace Lauren Kohut-Rost, who is retiring. If approved by the School Board at its April 28 meeting, Martinez’s first day would be May 11.

“The Clark County School District is fortunate to attract a candidate with the caliber of Mr. Martinez,” Jones said in a statement. “He has great credentials as an instructional leader and I am excited about the ideas he will bring to the district for advancing student achievement.”

Before joining the Washoe County School District, Martinez served as chief area officer, chief financial officer and the budget director of Chicago Public Schools. He is a Certified Public Accountant, receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in business administration from DePaul University.

“I will certainly miss Pedro, his passion for children and his leadership,” Dr. Heath Morrison, superintendent for Washoe County, said in a statement. “I hate to lose great leadership and talent in our organization, however, Clark County School District and Washoe County School District are entering into an unprecedented era of collaboration and having Pedro serving in a similar position that he held with WCSD will help benefit those endeavors.”

Though the move still needs approval from the School Board, Carolyn Edwards, the board's president, expressed satisfaction with the selection of Martinez.

The April 28 board meeting will be at 4 p.m. in the Edward A. Greer Education Center, 2832 E. Flamingo Road.
