McCarran International Airport scored a third consecutive month of increasing passenger counts in March.

Las Vegas’ airport served 3,564,841 arriving and departing passengers in March, a 2.2 percent increase when compared to March 2010.

It’s good news for Las Vegas, especially considering the number of people driving to Las Vegas on Interstate 15 was down more than 4 percent last month.

So far this year, McCarran has served 9,646,201 passengers, a 3.1 percent increase from the same portion of 2010.

Last year, the airport’s passenger count dropped 1.8 percent to about 39.8 million, the smallest decrease since the airport hit a record in 2007 with more than 47.7 million passengers.

March is typically a busy month for Las Vegas, with spring break and March Madness drawing visitors and helping most airlines that operate at McCarran get a boost for the month.

Southwest, by far the busiest airline at McCarran, saw a 0.2 percent decrease in March compared to the previous March, but for the year to date, Southwest has seen a 2.4 percent increase in passengers.

Delta, the No. 2 airline at the airport, had a 2.8 percent increase for the month, followed by US Airways with a 2.8 percent increase and American with a 5.8 percent increase. United Airlines had a 19 percent decrease in passengers for the month.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air had a 3.8 percent increase in passengers in March.
