A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized Friday after the family’s 70-pound pit bull bit his face and neck, Metro Police said. The boy was in critical but stable condition Friday night, officials said.

Police said they received a call from a “hysterical” family member shortly after 3 p.m. in the 6500 block of Coffeeville Creek Drive, near Desert Inn Road and Hollywood Boulevard. The boy was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center's trauma center with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening, police said.

“It was an attack, not an accident,” said Metro Lt. Dan McGrath. “They had to pull the dog off of the child. It wouldn’t let go.”

Animal Control has custody of the pit bull and Metro’s Abuse and Neglect Detail is investigating to determine whether criminal charges should be filed, McGrath said.

Police said the pit bull has bitten another family member in the past.

Police say parents should be observant of interactions between small children and pets and look for signs of animal aggression.
