LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Proposed cuts will deprive our children

Regarding the story in Sunday’s Las Vegas Sun, “10 fewer teachers: ‘Crushing’ ”:

As a retired elementary school teacher, I was appalled to read about Iverson Elementary School possibly losing 10 of its 35 teachers, resulting in fourth- and fifth-grade classes of 40 or more.

With so many pupils, the teacher’s role will change from educator to babysitter. Picture a classroom, designed for about 30 students, that is so crowded there will be wall-to-wall desks and chairs.

All of this so Gov. Brian Sandoval can protect corporate Nevada from having to pay more in taxes.

Nevada has never adequately supported its schools. You can go back decades, and Nevada is always at, or near the bottom, in school funding compared with other states. But these latest proposed cuts by Gov. Sandoval would mean that many of Nevada’s children will not get the education they deserve.
