Scream’: Then and now

Scream 4

Things have changed through the years, but there’s one constant in the Scream movies: Knives still work pretty well against the bad guy.

The original Scream in 1996 was very much of its time, with a story that relied on current technology and copious pop-culture references. How have things changed 15 years later, as Scream 4 hits theaters?

Then: Victims ask “Who is this?” when they get menacing phone calls from the killer. Now: Everyone has caller ID.

Then: Movie-obsessed nerd Randy (Jamie Kennedy) works in a video store. Now: Randy would stream Netflix and spout his opinions on YouTube.

Then: Sid (Neve Campbell) jokes that Tori Spelling will end up playing her in the movie version of her life. Now: Spelling’s too old; luckily there are plenty of equally terrible actresses on the new version of 90210.

Then: The killer uses a novelty voice-changer to disguise his identity. Now: There’s an app for that.
