LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Some ‘what-ifs’ for Nevada’s economy

The “What if?” article in Saturday’s Las Vegas Sun prompted me to consider that exact question relating to Nevada. Here are my “What ifs”:

What if ... Nevada had only two major sources of income to cover state expenses?

What if ... the Legislature spent the last 20-some years “studying” the problem and did nothing about it?

What if ... the United States experienced a major recession?

What if ... Nevada experienced unemployment rates above 10 percent for several years in a row?

What if ... the housing market collapsed and Nevada became No. 1 in foreclosed properties?

What if ... tourism slowed because visitors spent less or stayed away?

What if ... Nevada had a succession of do-nothing governors who steadfastly clung to “no new taxes” pledges?

What if ... state legislators cared more about their re-election than addressing and solving the state’s problems?

What if ... the governor proposed slashing education funding in a state already ranking among the nation’s lowest?

What if ... college campuses were closed, major departments were eliminated, tuition was raised?

Wouldn’t you think that the above “disaster” scenarios would be as devastating as any of the “disasters” the Sun discussed in the original story?

Just asking.
