Some teachers get notices as School District evaluates staffing levels

The Clark County School District sent out a number of surplus notices to teachers Friday as part of an annual process that schools undertake to determine necessary staffing levels for the upcoming school year.

The notices are sent out when a school experiences a decline in student population and has a surplus of teachers. The district didn't say how many notices were sent out.

An employee who is affected by the surplus might be eligible for other positions within the district or be able to “bump” an employee with less experience, according to School District officials.

During the March 24 School Board meeting, School District officials authorized using a state-codified “Reduction in Force” process, which allows for workforce reductions or layoffs when there is a lack of money or lack of work, to address budget cuts.

Affected teachers can expect the RIF letters by the end of April, district officials said.

During the March 24 school board meeting, district officials unveiled a tentative 2012 budget that would slash $411 million and lay off nearly 2,500 employees.

The tentative budget also included a 7.8 percent across-the-board salary reduction, a 25 percent cut in textbook and supplies funding, an increase in health insurance costs for employees and an increase in class sizes by up to seven students.

The School Board will vote on the tentative budget during a meeting Wednesday. A meeting to adopt the final budget will occur May 18.
