Metro Police said a 24-year-old Las Vegas man died early Sunday morning after the car he was driving at a high rate of speed crashed in the eastern valley.

Police said the single-vehicle accident happened at 4:56 a.m. near the intersection of Mountain Vista Street and Flamingo Road.

A preliminary police investigation indicated the 1998 Saturn SI was northbound on Mountain Vista at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle after crossing Flamingo Road, authorities said. The vehicle spun out in a clockwise rotation before colliding with a wooden power pole on Mountain Vista near Charles Ronald Avenue.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. An unidentified male passenger was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with critical injuries, police said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will identify the victim pending notification of his family. The accident investigation is ongoing.
