Temperature climbs to 92 in Las Vegas, ties record high

It's no April Fools’ joke: The Las Vegas Valley tied a record high of 92 degrees today, a temperature last reached on this date in 1966.

National Weather Service meteorologist Larry Jensen said McCarran International Airport hit 92 at 3:22 p.m.

Last month set a record as the 10th warmest March in the books since 1937. The average overall temperature for March was 60.7 degrees, which is 2.4 degrees above normal. The warmest March recorded in Las Vegas was in 2004 with an average temperature of 66.5 degrees.

Death Valley on Thursday set a record high for the month of March when the temperature reached 103 degrees, topping the previous record of 102 degrees set on March 28, 1986.

Like today, Saturday in Las Vegas should be mostly sunny with a high of 88 degrees, but the Spring Mountains and the Las Vegas Valley will also be under a high wind watch during the afternoon and evening. Southwest winds could gust up to 60 mph.

The strongest winds are expected on the east slopes of the Spring Mountains on Saturday afternoon and possibly reach the western valley Saturday evening. The areas most likely to see strong winds include Red Rock Canyon, Summerlin, Mountain's Edge and Blue Diamond.

Visitors to Red Rock Canyon should be particularly mindful of strong winds, Jensen said, especially if they plan to have a picnic.

“You could encounter ... some lower visibility and dust, especially if you’re climbing or hiking,” Jensen said. “It could get pretty windy out there. If you’re doing picnics, you may want to staple your paper plates to the ground, or they might be blowing all over the place.”
