Passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport saw a slight decline in August compared to the same month a year earlier.

The number of passengers arriving to and departing from the airport dropped 0.4 percent. The airport served 3,505,650 people in August 2009 and 3,493,158 last month.

August is the second month this year to have less than a 1 percent drop compared to a year earlier. Traffic fell 0.2 percent in January, 6.2 percent in February, 4 percent in March, 5 percent in April, 1.6 percent in May and 1.1 percent in both June and July.

The number of passengers so far this year is down 2.4 percent from the same period in 2009.

Year-to-date, McCarran has seen 26,625,203 passengers. At this time last year, it had served 27,287,249 passengers.

Southwest Airlines, the airport’s busiest carrier, had a 3.1 percent increase in August compared to a year earlier.

The airport’s second-busiest carrier, Delta, had a 7 percent increase, while United had a 9.1 percent decrease and American had a 2.2 percent increase.

Allegiant, which made the top-five carrier list at the airport for the first time in July, was knocked off the list in August after serving about 8,000 fewer passengers than US Airways in the month.
