CARSON CITY – The state Transportation Board canceled its meeting set for today due to the hospitalization of Gov. Jim Gibbons, its chairman.

A spokesman for the governor said he would not attend by telephone from the Reno hospital, where he is recovering from surgery after breaking his pelvis.

The transportation board was to consider future road-building projects. The meeting will be rescheduled.

Dan Burns, communications director for Gibbons, said the governor "will be able to continue to perform his duties as governor, however his mobility will be very limited while he recuperates and undergoes physical therapy."

Burns said the governor would likely remain in Renown Regional Medical Center until the end of the week.

While recuperating at the governor’s mansion in Carson City, his staff would be able to meet with him and carry out policies, his office said.

Gibbons underwent two hours of surgery Wednesday to repair his pelvis, broken in two places when he was thrown from a horse Tuesday at Pyramid Lake, near Reno.

Burns said, “The doctor who performed the surgery says the operation went very well and the governor’s prognosis is excellent.”
