Website lists people who owe the state money

CARSON CITY — A new state website allows users to learn the names of people who owe the state money.

State Controller Kim Wallin said the website will carry more information on the finances of the state. One new feature is a list of businesses and individuals who owe money to the state and the amount they owe.

When state agencies are unable to collect outstanding debts, they turn the accounts over to the controller’s office.

“By posting the names of debtors, we hope to encourage the payment of the debts and discourage others from incurring debts in the future,” Wallin said.

By the end of the month, the website also will allow people who owe the state money to pay by a debit or credit card.

“This feature will make it easier for people to make their payments, accelerate collections and reduce the number of returned checks,” Wallin said.
