Las Vegas Sun reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer break down high school football's tough Southeast Division. Five of the league's seven teams are part of the Sun's top-10 rankings.

One of the teams in this week's high school football rankings will not make the postseason.
Five schools from the Henderson-based Southeast Division are part of the Sun's 10-team rankings, and since only the top four finishers from each league make the playoffs, the regular season will be the end of the road for one quality program.
Basic, Del Sol, Foothill, Liberty and Silverado have combined to start the season 6-2 and appear headed for great things. League play, when the teams will surely take turns beating each other, starts next week.
Basic and Foothill weren't part of the preseason poll, but both picked up wins in their initial two games.
The rankings will be updated each week during the regular season. They were selected by the Sun's Ray Brewer.
1. Bishop Gorman (1-1) — Gorman split its initial two games — two contests against elite out-of-state competition. You can't drop them in the rankings for losing three weeks ago to nationally respected Hamilton High of Arizona. After all, USA Today still has the Gaels in its poll. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday at Clark.
2. Palo Verde (2-0) — Palo Verde's three-point victory last week against an improved Liberty team confirms the Panthers are the class of the Northwest Division. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Mojave.
3. Las Vegas (2-0) — The Wildcats have outscored opponents 83-22 in winning their first two games, and with experienced players at several positions, they could be the class of the Sunrise Region. Don't be surprised if Las Vegas is playing during Thanksgiving weekend in the state semifinals. Up next: 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Crest (Utah).
4. Silverado (1-0) — Silverado was solid on both sides of the football in its season-opening 28-0 victory against Desert Oasis. Up next: 9 a.m. Saturday against Eldorado.
5. Liberty (0-1) — Minus a few untimely mistakes, Liberty could have defeated Palo Verde last week. And that was without Sam Tai, the Patriots' stud defensive end who is nursing a foot injury. The Patriots are still one of the area's elite teams. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Spring Valley.
6. Foothill (2-0) — Foothill has scored 101 points in cruising to easy victories in its first two games. The Falcons, who reached the Sunrise semifinals last year, won't be challenged until the first week of October. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Desert Pines.
7. Basic (2-0) — Basic's come-from-behind victory against Durango puts the Wolves in the rankings. The win also gives them confidence they can play against some of the valley's elite teams. They will have a big test Friday against Canyon Springs. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Canyon Springs.
8. Faith Lutheran (1-0) — The Crusaders passed for 297 yards in picking up a respectable victory against Fountain Valley of Southern California two weeks ago.
9. Del Sol (1-1) — After giving up a two-touchdown halftime lead two weeks ago in dropping the season opener to Durango, Del Sol found its rhythm in the second half against Canyon Springs last week. But the defending Sunrise champions still have plenty to prove — especially in a tough Southeast Division. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Valley.
10. Durango (1-1) — Durango held Basic scoreless in the first half last week, but couldn't sustain the effort a full 48 minutes. The Trailblazers are still the second-best team in the Southwest Division behind state-favorite Bishop Gorman. Up next: 1 p.m. Saturday at Bonanza.
OUT: Legacy (0-1) and Canyon Springs (0-1) — Legacy was held scoreless in the second half two weeks ago in falling to Spring Valley by one point; Canyon Springs couldn't contain Del Sol's Chris Marshall in a 31-16 defeat.

what kind of football are you watching to put an 0-1 team or a 1-1 team in the top ten...
I dont mind an opinion but stupidity... My old man told me as a kid you cant teach stupid and who ever does theses rankings has no clue
Faith Lutheran.. are you kidding me..who is the ad at Faith paying to rank them..
hellboys don't be retarded. Gorman was ranked #1 in this poll two weeks ago when they were 0-1...it's who that loss was to and how close the game was. Liberty was a hop and a skip away from beating Palo Verde the clear #2 team in the valley. Losing to them by a hair in their house doesn't drop you out of the top ten... plus half of the vegas schools have football teams that are comparable to pop warner so you wouldn't want to rank them just based on win/loss.
Although i do agree on Faith Lutheran they have like 2-3 good players and that's it. I dont think they beat most of the other 23 teams they're ranked ahead of.
Brewer how about some state rankings?
First, how does Del Sol get ranked ahead of a team they lost to 1 week ago? They're both 1-1 and Durango's loss was to #7 Basic, while Del Sol's loss was to them...
Second, Faith? Really?
Finally, Ray- what do you think could/should be a solution to the terrible playoff format in Las Vegas, annually producing the same, predictable matchups? This year, Gorman and Palo, the 2 best teams in the state, will have to play before the state championship and, as you noted, only 4 of the 5 legit teams from the Southeast will even get in. At the same time, teams like Valley, Rancho, Eldo, or Chap will get in with a losing record.
Basic should be ranked higher. They are always the underdogs.
i think teams 4-7 are all pretty much a tie for fourth right now. Basic, Liberty, Foothill and Silverado are, until a few weeks from now when we see who can beat who, all pretty much the 4th best teams in town.
Gang: Let's see how Faith Lutheran does Saturday against Legacy. Its win two weeks ago against Fountain Valley from the Orange County area was impressive. Faith has a great passing attack with three potential Division-I players.
Game of the year is Liberty vs Silverado the winner controls the east part of the city, that includes Las Vegas.
Ray, thank you for your encouragement for Faith. Win or lose, we're glad to be in 4A and playing many of the finest teams in the valley. Congratulations to all the hard-working players out there and best of luck this season.
i think basic should be number 5 or 6 considering liberty did play a really good team and came close but we should still be before foothill who hasent played anyone good so its naturally a easy win for them with them having alot of returning starters and a good quaterback and all its a cruise right through the season till the second of oct. and basic has like 6 of your preseason top 10 teams on their schedule and already knocked one out and have anther one next week against a good canyon springs team and foothill is out there playing chap
all i gotta say is go wolves!
everybody from the southeast knows from brewers past he has no respect for BASIC and is always rooting against for some unreasonable animosity against them! chap sucks yet he still picks them when he shouldnt...leave the picks to those who know whats going on out there
It's your time right now Southeast(after 2 games) but make no mistake...the Northwest will have more top ten teams by the end of the year and a state finalist.
