Las Vegas Sun reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer break down high school football's tough Southeast Division. Five of the league's seven teams are part of the Sun's top-10 rankings.

One of the teams in this week's high school football rankings will not make the postseason.

Five schools from the Henderson-based Southeast Division are part of the Sun's 10-team rankings, and since only the top four finishers from each league make the playoffs, the regular season will be the end of the road for one quality program.

Basic, Del Sol, Foothill, Liberty and Silverado have combined to start the season 6-2 and appear headed for great things. League play, when the teams will surely take turns beating each other, starts next week.

Basic and Foothill weren't part of the preseason poll, but both picked up wins in their initial two games.

The rankings will be updated each week during the regular season. They were selected by the Sun's Ray Brewer.

1. Bishop Gorman (1-1)Gorman split its initial two games — two contests against elite out-of-state competition. You can't drop them in the rankings for losing three weeks ago to nationally respected Hamilton High of Arizona. After all, USA Today still has the Gaels in its poll. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday at Clark.

2. Palo Verde (2-0) — Palo Verde's three-point victory last week against an improved Liberty team confirms the Panthers are the class of the Northwest Division. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Mojave.

3. Las Vegas (2-0) — The Wildcats have outscored opponents 83-22 in winning their first two games, and with experienced players at several positions, they could be the class of the Sunrise Region. Don't be surprised if Las Vegas is playing during Thanksgiving weekend in the state semifinals. Up next: 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Mountain Crest (Utah).

4. Silverado (1-0)Silverado was solid on both sides of the football in its season-opening 28-0 victory against Desert Oasis. Up next: 9 a.m. Saturday against Eldorado.

5. Liberty (0-1) — Minus a few untimely mistakes, Liberty could have defeated Palo Verde last week. And that was without Sam Tai, the Patriots' stud defensive end who is nursing a foot injury. The Patriots are still one of the area's elite teams. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Spring Valley.

6. Foothill (2-0)Foothill has scored 101 points in cruising to easy victories in its first two games. The Falcons, who reached the Sunrise semifinals last year, won't be challenged until the first week of October. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Desert Pines.

7. Basic (2-0) — Basic's come-from-behind victory against Durango puts the Wolves in the rankings. The win also gives them confidence they can play against some of the valley's elite teams. They will have a big test Friday against Canyon Springs. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Canyon Springs.

8. Faith Lutheran (1-0) — The Crusaders passed for 297 yards in picking up a respectable victory against Fountain Valley of Southern California two weeks ago.

9. Del Sol (1-1) — After giving up a two-touchdown halftime lead two weeks ago in dropping the season opener to Durango, Del Sol found its rhythm in the second half against Canyon Springs last week. But the defending Sunrise champions still have plenty to prove — especially in a tough Southeast Division. Up next: 7 p.m. Saturday against Valley.

10. Durango (1-1)Durango held Basic scoreless in the first half last week, but couldn't sustain the effort a full 48 minutes. The Trailblazers are still the second-best team in the Southwest Division behind state-favorite Bishop Gorman. Up next: 1 p.m. Saturday at Bonanza.

OUT: Legacy (0-1) and Canyon Springs (0-1)Legacy was held scoreless in the second half two weeks ago in falling to Spring Valley by one point; Canyon Springs couldn't contain Del Sol's Chris Marshall in a 31-16 defeat.
