Trial reset for man accused of beating elderly woman in burglary
Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 | 10:25 a.m.
A trial has been delayed until February for a man accused of beating an elderly woman in her home during a burglary in October 2009 in the northwestern Las Vegas Valley.
Daniel Ruiz, 21, will stand trial Feb. 7 on charges of kidnapping in the first degree of an older person, robbery of an older person, burglary and grand larceny. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Ruiz is being held in the Clark County Detention Center on $100,000 bail.
Ruiz had been scheduled to go to trial on Tuesday. But district court records show that his public defender asked the court recently for more time to prepare his case.
A pre-trial calendar call has been set for 9 a.m. Feb. 3 before District Judge Abbi Silver.
Ruiz was arrested in October after he allegedly tried to steal a woman’s purse at the Borders Bookstore at 2190 N. Rainbow Blvd., police reports said. He was arrested in connection with grand larceny and possession of a credit card without the owner’s consent.
During the arrest, detectives compared his photo to a composite sketch released in the attack of a woman who was robbed and beaten in the face on Oct. 14 at her home near Buffalo Avenue and Smoke Ranch.
In November, both cases were combined into one criminal complaint against Ruiz.

This is why we should bring back public stonings
What a PUKE, beating up an old lady. Hopefully he will receive an "attitude adjustment" while in jail.
What a sad excuse of a man.

What is with all these long court dates around here? What happened to a speedy trial?
Is there so much crime here that the PD's office has to delay all these cases? Paris Hilton doesn't have to come back till 10/27 for her first court appearance. What is up with that?
Sheesh! I used to think corruption was rampant in NY till we moved here.
In my opinion since Judge Abbi Silver has taken the bench she has been pro criminal defense attorney.
There is no need for a continuance in my estimation. The PD office has a lot of attorneys, so make someone take this case to trial.
Where is Judge Stew Bell when you need him?
To ProudPD: Yes, but you can't fault Ruiz's public defender for asking for more time to prepare a defense. When a criminal is caught red-handed (by a retired officer, no less), it must be very difficult to decide what the course of action should be.
To PGelsman: I agree that one year and four months is waay too long to wait for justice for the victims in this case.
Are you implying that Las Vegas is corrupt? LMFAO
hey Sun
Why are you not reporting on the Brian Jones rape and kidnapping trial currently going on?
Our Justice system is out of wack. It favors the scum-bags who rob, rape & murder. And those sad sacks who call themselves public defenders? They're a plague on society! Always making excuses (his mama's milk was sour) or blaming the victim (she asked for it). They can't get a real job. They have to live off of the taxpayers or starve!
Is this guy in jail?
another human waste of skin and air
