Sharron Angle's Mexican-American daughter-in-law is defending the Republican against claims that a series of her TV ads that depict Hispanics as menacing criminals are racist.

In an interview Friday with the Reno Spanish-language radio station KQLO, Jessica Angle said her mother-in-law is not racist.

But Angle acknowledged that the ads that contrast images of sullen, dark-skinned illegal immigrants against fearful, pale families were initially hard to watch.

Angle says she told herself that the ads do not reflect her family, because her Mexican parents entered the United States legally.

The ads slam Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for defending policies that would allow illegal immigrants to become legal residents.

Some Hispanic groups have declared the commercials the most anti-Hispanic political spots in history.
