The defending Sunrise Region Del Sol High football team finally got its first league win, beating host Coronado 43-22 Friday night.
Waiting until the first week of October for a league win isn’t ideal, but the Dragons (3-3, 1-2 Southeast) still are in the thick of the playoff race.
Del Sol opened league play Sept. 24 by dropping a heartbreaker in overtime to Liberty. The Dragons led by 10 points with under two minutes to play.
Last week, still shaking off the shock of losing to Liberty, they were blown out by Foothill, 42-10.
“It’s been a rough couple of weeks,” Del Sol coach Preston Goroff said.
Quarterback Troy Miller threw a pair of touchdown passes to Jason Meuir in the victory, and Dwayne Kirkland scored on a kickoff return and a rushing touchdown. Chris Marshal added a touchdown for Del Sol and Dylan Lindemann kicked a pair of field goals.
“We played a whole game tonight, which is something we haven’t been able to do,” Goroff said.
