North Las Vegas shifts money for more school crossing guards

North Las Vegas is short 24 crossing guards about a month into the school year.

On Wednesday night, the City Council unanimously approved a measure that should help change that.

The council voted to lift a hiring freeze and shift $73,800 from the city’s contingency fund into the Police Department’s budget, allowing for more crossing guards near schools.

The contingency fund is $500,000 the city has set aside for emergencies, city spokeswoman Juliet Casey said.

Acting Police Chief Joseph Chronister said many schools will be turning to volunteer crossing guards at minor intersections to help the city save money.

“The remainder of this year, we will work in concert with city officials to work toward fixing issues for the next school year,” Chronister said.
