Child playing with matches starts house fire

House fire

A house fire that caused an estimated $65,000 damage was ruled accidental after firefighters determined a child playing with matches caused the blaze, officials said.

Nobody was injured.

Las Vegas firefighters received numerous calls of a house fire in the 4600 block of East Monroe Avenue, near Owens Avenue and Marion Drive, about 5 p.m. Thursday. Firefighters found nobody in the house and a bedroom on fire, officials said.

The fire was extinguished in less than 10 minutes, and the family arrived home shortly afterward. Officials said that a child had been playing with matches in a bedroom earlier and caught the bed on fire. The child was able to put the fire out, officials said.

The fire smoldered in the bed and reignited after everyone left, officials said.

The bedroom was gutted, while the rest of the house sustained heat and smoke damage, officials said.
