The U.S. Postal Service is again reviewing the possibility of closing the Desert Inn Retail Unit located at 2478 E. Desert Inn Road, near the Eastern Avenue intersection.

If the closure, which Postal Service officials say would take place prior to its lease expiring in August 2011, were implemented, Desert Inn’s postal services would be consolidated into the East Las Vegas station, 4948 Mountain Vista St.

The East Las Vegas station is about four miles from the Desert Inn location.

A questionnaire was distributed to area residents on Oct. 15 to gauge public opinion on the possible change. The survey was closed on Friday.

“This is only a study,” said Marilyn Fenimore, the consumer relations coordinator at the Las Vegas Post Office. “We want to eliminate redundancy of services and try to be as efficient as possible without impact to our customers.”

During the review process – which may take up to a year with public input – customer service at area post offices won't be adversely affected, the Postal Service said.

The Desert Inn Retail Unit was one of four Las Vegas Valley post offices that were removed from a list of five considered for closure in July 2009. The removal came after a meeting between Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.); Postmaster General John E. Potter; and Jim Bilbray, a former Nevada congressman and current member of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors.

Three other post offices looked at in 2009 – the Garside, Huntridge and King Station offices – are not being considered for consolidation or closure at this time. The U.S. Postal Service is still eyeing the Las Vegas Strip Station for possible closure, Fenimore said.

Residents with questions about the study should contact Loretta Kirkpatrick, Manager of Consumer Affairs at 702-361-9204.
