Henderson will be hosting its annual WinterFest celebration Dec. 9 through Dec. 11 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street. The free event will include the city’s tree-lighting ceremony, train rides and a petting zoo.

Holiday decorations will adorn Water Street between Basic Road and Atlantic Avenue, officials said. The official tree lighting, and Santa’s arrival, will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 10.

The festival will showcase a “Sounds of the Season” concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 by the Henderson Symphony Orchestra. Actors will put on “A Charlie Brown Christmas” at 6 p.m. Dec. 11 at the events plaza.

WinterFest will also include two contests: parade floats and gingerbread houses.

The parade and gingerbread-house contest theme will be “Comic Strip Favorites,” meaning that participants should fashion their floats to look like superheroes, “Peanuts” characters, or other classics.

The deadline to participate in the parade contest is Nov. 24. The event will feature cash prizes, including $750 for first place in the “Best Overall Themed” category, officials said.

Gingerbread houses will be awarded cash prizes, too. The best individual or family to participate will receive $200. The deadline to participate in the gingerbread house contest is Dec. 1.
