LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Democrats on the right side of history

Whenever a major change takes place, people get riled up because they are uncertain of the future.

On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act despite major opposition from Republicans. Seventy-five years have passed since the signing. Millions of people have greatly benefited.

Thirty years later, on July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Medicare Act. This also occurred under intense Republican opposition. Again, how many millions of Americans have benefited?

In 1997, the Children’s Health Insurance Program was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. This law helps provide health insurance to children whose families are having financial difficulties. Many thousands are grateful for the law.

Throughout our history, Republicans have fought against social reform and Democrats have fought for it. Looking back on history, who was right? Where would Americans be today without Social Security, Medicare and programs such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program?

Democrats were able to get health care reform passed this week with total opposition from the Republican Party. I predict history will, once again, show the Democrats were right.
