Man accused of trying to meet girl, 14, at McCarran for sex

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 | 1:27 p.m.

A Las Vegas man was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on charges that he tried to coerce a 14-year-old girl to have sex with him.

Darryl Owen Walizer, 42, allegedly tried to meet who he thought was a 14-year-old girl and her mother March 12 at McCarran International Airport. But he was met by undercover detectives who arrested him.

The case began when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities got information from the police department in Garland, Texas. Police said that one of their undercover detectives had been contacted by Walizer online.

Walizer is being charged with two federal crimes: coercion and enticement of a minor, and commission of a felony sex offense by someone required to register as a sex offender. Walizer has previous convictions in Ohio and Virginia.

If convicted, he faces 20 years to life in prison, as well as lifetime supervised release. The prosecutor on the case is Assistant U.S. Attorney Nancy J. Koppe.

Walizer is scheduled to appear in federal court at 8:30 a.m. March 26.
